“Iced Out”

"Iced Out"

“Iced Out”

“Iced Out”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I really wanted to paint a snow scene, but the sun was leaving fast. Driving out to a nearby favorite sunset place, I found many of the oystermens’ boats frozen into the pond’s ice field. I became involved and jumped out of the car onto the snowy shore and photographed the play between the light and shadows of this boat. I was resigned to using just my camera, as it was cold at 21º with a slight breeze and minutes before the sun would set. But, the pent up urge of not painting for too many days overtook me. Grabbing my gear I raced to the edge of the snow/water/ice and dashed this piece off until the sun had set. Concentration took over my common sense and, even with gloves on, my fingers got so numb that I could not open the clip on my board to put away my paper towels. With the warm car right there, I didn’t bother, and put stuff away hellter skelter, grateful to still be able to open the door handle and jump inside…

"AquinnahSnow"

“AquinnahSnow”

“Aquinnah Snow”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The Jan. 2nd snow storm was not one to be out painting in. After many miles, stopping at favorite spots along the way to marvel and photograph the altering landscape, we came to the cliffs. Always scouting for new and unusual views, since last summer I had been saving this for a fog or snow event. The perfect time was now: wind, snow, evening, lighthouse beam, 4 wheel drive. Only the hunter’s eyes of Buddy Vanderhoop caught us in my painting spot as he rounded the circle doing a last weather check of his families’ restaurant…

“Late Fall”

“Late Fall”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

As the sun was fast setting the sky turned gold, the marsh smoldered orange. A leafless distant shore muted charcoal gray in the shadow of sky glow. The moment to paint was now, before the waters blue of reflected cosmos boiled over into celestial darkness…

"Chilmark Moon"

“Chilmark Moon”

“Chilmark Moon”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD

Sometimes the weather does not cooperate, and sometimes I do not cooperate. This time it was me. I did this painting of the October full moon and wanted to go back and work on the landscape part a bit more. But, the weather closed in and I never got there. So I did go back recently and fixed things up to my liking. Then, I got excited about another piece I was working on and totally forgot about this one until tonight…

"Menemsha Out Post"

“Menemsha Out Post”

“Menemsha Outpost”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

At marsh level, this is the expanse towards the beach, parking lot and gas station. On the walk down I turned a bamboo shrouded corner and came face to face with two very young and inexperienced deer. At first they didn’t want to give me the right of way! After a minute of no one moving, they guessed that they might move 3 feet into the under brush and watched me pass. I have to admit that I was a bit more careful walking the rest of the path in case a bow hunter was lurking nearby. The openness at marsh edge as I came out of the closeness of the woods was dramatic. Wandering the verge, scouting a bit, I came upon this view…

“Bee Home”

“Bee Home”

“Bee Home”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I was drawn to the block-like shapes and white and blue shadows of these bee homes contrasted against the afternoon light on the wily, encroaching landscape. While enjoying the steady, gentle hum from these working hives, I kept hearing a subtle snorting and stamping from the other side of the blueberry bushes down the lane. I was thinking deer, as it is just about rutting season, when two haltered horses burst past me at full gallop. Turned out they were escapees from the neighbor’s paddock and soon enough were rounded up and lead home…

"Around The Corner"

“Around The Corner”

“Around The Corner”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I scouted here late one sunny afternoon. When I viewed it this cloudy overcast day, it impressed me even more. The darks had less definition, but somehow felt moodier and more expressive without the bright sunlight and deeper shadows. I accidentally flushed a Great Blue Heron from out of the marsh behind me as I opened and unsnapped my paint thinner pots. I soon was quickly visited by a lone jogger and then two women walking 5 dogs. Where I stood, barely moving except for brushes, partially hidden from the path by a cedar tree, I was somewhat invisible to the dogs. Only the tiny Brussels Griffon sensed my presence and gave me a passing bark…

"Arboretum"

“Arboretum”

“Arboretum”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The rhododendrons were still in bloom when I began this piece. I found it hanging about in my studio looking dejected. Today the sun was out just as it was when I started. A perfect evening to finish and a bonus, no mosquitos! I had fun playing with the field color and then adding the blue to the stones to pull out the shadows. A reverse of what usually happens in a landscape, the blue recedes the background and the green/yellow warmth of the field normally signals closeness to the foreground…

"Hay Rolls, Moo Lane"

“Hay Rolls, Moo Lane”

“Hay Rolls, Moo Lane”, this is a larger painting, 9″ x 12″, oil on canvas panel. $1350.00 USD

(Please note that this is 9″x 12″, more than double my normal size.) Today, I returned to Mermaid Farm to buy some vegetable plants. As I was backing up to turn about, my eyes caught the shadows draped across the lane to the dairy barn. I stopped, jumped out and took several photos. Looking at those pictures when I got home, I realized this was my next painting. I drove right back, set up and grabbed the only canvas panel I had left in my case, except, it had a painting from another day on it. Curses, if I drove back home the shadows would be gone. I found my larger case in the back with this one blank panel on it and went to work…

"Ford At Mermaid Farm"

“Ford At Mermaid Farm”

“Ford At Mermaid Farm”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD

I came to get milk. The farm stand by the road was empty. I walked up to the dairy barn and returned for this painting…
