"Katama Moon"

“Katama Moon”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I planned creating another painting of the flat bottomed pond skiff, “Tidely Idely” (see my work March 30, 2011 on my website), which is moored just to the left of this view. However, as I was exploring the best place to setup my easel, I saw that the moon had just come up from behind the cloud bank. I am a sucker for painting moon rise images, but I had not been paying attention this month to moon phases. Normally I plot a plan of action a day or two before a full moon. This was the last full moon I was able to capture about May 15th. It is hard to believe the landscape greened up in just one month, but it didn’t look like this on June 15th. This is on the glacier outwash plain, flat with a reluctant slope into the Atlantic Ocean…

I had tried to capture the moon on my canvas the day before, but it became very overcast by sunset. Tonight was gorgeous and worth the wait. The combination of clouds turning orange and the moon just popping through the horizon darkness made it even more enchanting. Even the mosquitoes paused in their work to equally enjoy the view…
