I WORK EN PLEIN AIR, OUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE… Welcome. I am back to painting again after a sabbatical that included a few pieces done for charitable fund raisers. I am continuing to make small, 6" x 8", landscape oils, but not every day. I am also working on larger pieces. Every time I finish a painting, I will place it here on my website. After driving into Dallas and back over the weekend, I experienced the full scope of the Texas wild flower season along the roadsides. Upon returning, all I wanted to do was paint wild flowers. I have been waiting for this Mesquite tree to finish leafing out. I thought it was ready for today’s painting. By the time I was half way through, I had an audience of 7 calves! They were having fun licking the shiny headlights on my car. I finally had to shoo them away when one tried to bite the front grille work. Luckily the mom’s stayed a respectable distance away, and none of them was interested in the Mesquite I was painting…

I discovered this garden in a local newpaper article. Went to see it and photographed it, but had not been able to paint there until today. It is one of the most incredible, small, 3.5 acres, gardens I have ever enjoyed painting in, bar none. The Chandor Gardens was designed and built starting in 1936 by British portrait painter Douglas Chandor. Some of his most famous portrait sitters were Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth. I look forward to creating many more images from this marvelous place. This particular image is of the Moon Gate Douglas built. Some of the imbedded decorative elements near the top are made out of whole soda bottles with the bottoms painted copper green/blue! The colored icons on the top ends are dragons denoting the prestige of the owner or of the house…

I have been dying to do a few paintings at my friends’ Barking Rocks Winery. I have been studying the geography and flora and fauna there for a year or so and felt ready to capture the vines as they go from dormancy to full bloom. Today when I arrived the vines had all just been pruned and the tiny buds were growing large as I painted in the 80 degree sunshine. It didn’t hurt that I was offered a glass or two of the grape as I stroked paint to canvas!…

Today was slippery going getting to my painting site. The clay soil was still holding moisture from the 3 plus inches of rain from the end of last week. I drove down the pasture. Then I walked down to ford the stream which was higher than usual. Luck was there as a fallen log helped me keep my boots dry. But I almost lost it climbing up the far side slipping and sliding on the clay. The sun was low in that far pasture and it was highlighting the surveyors tape flagging some points of interest. Now they became my points of interest…

It was raining all day today. I thought I’d have to do a studio still life. I went in the studio and looked out at the barn and saw all these puddles reflecting sky where once was dry earth. The rains had made all the colors so much darker as they got wet. The contrasts of reflective puddles and dark grasses and black trees and brooding skies was rather intense. So I set up by the window and painted…

Today’s painting is a view of an ajoining property to the ranch on which I live. It is for sale and will be a memory at some future date, as houses or oil and gas exploration take their toll on the landscape and wild life thereon. Right now it is pasture for the 50 head of cattle plus newborns which graze freely on both properties. It also holds memories of the oyster bed I found in the middle of the land when I was out painting 2 years ago. There were almost a dozen fossilized oyster shells scattered on top of the slope I was standing on…

I had to get out of my studio to paint today. It was 81 and a beautiful day. Suggestions had been made to paint Comanche Peak as it is the commanding presence above Lake Granbury for 10’s of miles around. I found a spot in a school parking lot which was far enough away and high enough for a great view. As the sun began to set, the colors came out and shifted into this wondrous collection of tones and values…
