I admit I got wet while painting this image. I set up between radar viewed banks of wet clouds. It had looked clear for an hour’s time, but I miscalculated the moisture in the fog. It condensed on the power lines above me and dripped, dripped, dripped on my shoulders and hat. Finally, it was so thick my canvas and paints were glistening like a cold glass of beer on a hot summer’s day. Speaking of beer, I left quickly and went home to have one…

“Slow On The Creek”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The buoy angle let me know it was just around high tide on Menemsha Creek. When the waters rush in or out, the buoy not only is almost submerged by the push on it, but it lists at more than 45º. (I always wonder how much weight is holding it in place on the bottom of the Creek.) As the rain squall moved in I had to totally close my windows to keep dry. The wet brings out color and more contrast in the landscape, just as the gray of the clouds dulls the blue-green of the Creek and forces the any other colors forward. I was especially needing something red to paint in all the rain at the end of this day and the channel marker was just right…

This was a nice sunny, out of the wind spot to paint from, until the owner drove up and parked his truck right in front of the buoy. Two hours later he finally went home and I was able to paint the channel and buoy. The clouds were great all day long, so the waiting actually allowed me to catch them with the high lights around each one as the day got later…

The Tomahawk is one of the last of the fleet of charter fishing boats to be hauled out for the winter. Captain Buddy Vanderhoop works the waters as long and hard as he can while the game fish are still out of hibernation and catchable. His vessel must have just been hauled out. The rich black of the hull contrasted fiercely witht the subtle, soft, winter seaside colors all around it. The Tomahawk was a painting in my mind the instant my eyes came upon her. Work had to proceeed from inside my van as the wind and rain left me no quarter in which to hide…
