Spring! On Martha’s Vineyard, we are lucky if it lasts two weeks as the season rushes from the dulls of late winter headlong to summer. I love daffodils. I painted this one to capture that sweet fresh look and scent of spring… well, the scent is only a memory, but the glow will remain.

I was alerted to this magnolia being in bloom at the Polly Hill Arboretum. As soon as I got there it started pouring rain. I put my rain jacket on and walked about in the downpour finding shelter under trees. I dared to take some photos under those conditions. Everything was at its darkest tonal value from being wet and it was near the end of daylight hours so all dark areas were darker still. Yet the rain made them have a vision of softness. Scents of this or that bloom would suddenly waft up among the rain drops and assault my senses. The rain stopped and I rushed back with my equipment and worked swiftly as it was dripping off the trees and could restart any time…

I was introduced to this yellow blossoming magnolia tree a week and a half ago. I have been watching and patiently waiting for the full bloom to come. I received the email early this morn that today was my day. I have not been disappointed. It is a magnificent creamy yellow citricy color, quite different from the whites and the pink blush white blossoms I usually have painted. A real challenge to create out of a limited value range of yellows and still stay on track. There are no pure white highlights, but the lightest light yellows. I did cheat and put in 2 areas of white on top of the yellow highlights just to give it a final push against the subtler darker yellow values. But they do not read as pure white as the traces of the underpainting of yellow contaminate the attempt…

Continuing with my daffodil obsession, I found this orange cup by a neighbor’s stonewall. I couldn’t paint it where it was or I would have been found run over by the side of the road. So I cut and brought it home to paint outside on the east porch (in a vase) with this actual wall and view behind it. Plein air, sort of, alla prima for sure…

Although reworked recently, this medium size painting was created in July, out on location. It was a foggy afternoon/evening. The light source was muted and unchanging. I
was able to work for much more than my 2 hour limit without fear
of losing my initial vision due to shadows moving. I have always
loved to paint tall daylilies and these were as tall as me. I could look
straight at them instead of down upon them, giving me opportunity to put in their landscaped background, the Polly Hill Arboretum…
