I WORK EN PLEIN AIR, OUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE… Welcome. I am back to painting again after a sabbatical that included a few pieces done for charitable fund raisers. I am continuing to make small, 6" x 8", landscape oils, but not every day. I am also working on larger pieces. Every time I finish a painting, I will place it here on my website. During gloomy, overcast days it is sometimes hard to find good subject matter to paint. The light is flat. It should be easy to capture since it does not change much, whereas on a sunny day shadows constantly shift or leave altogether. This was a bit harder as there were rents in the fabric of the clouds, allowing sun and/or blue sky in and out of the landscape…

It was raining when I started out, but stopped when I arrived at the western end of the island. I walked up to the lookout point, set up and started to paint. The breeze was light, but from the direction of the swamps below. The mosquito cloud built around me. I double shirted myself and continued on until dusk. I packed up in haste and raced off to my vehicle. As I climbed in, the heavens let loose and it poured. Still, I would call it a good day…

I was not scouting for a particular view when I started out today. In my van by this beach path watching terns dive for their dinner, I wondered if the fishing would be good. Opening the tail gate to grab my fishing rod, I got my paints out instead. As I began painting, every 15 or 20 minutes another sailboat would come through the passage between the far islands and pose for me…

I have always wanted to do a painting of Bittersweet Farm since I was little and use to ride my bicycle past it in the summers. This gable end faces toward the road and makes it seem massive even from a distance. I believe it was built as a dairy barn and now is in use as a horse barn. It has a nice feeling there and I hope to return to create a few more paintings over the next year…
