"Sepiessa Point"

“Sepiessa Point”

“Sepiessa Point”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

A short walk on a sun filled day and I found myself contemplating the edge of West Tisbury Great Pond. Around the next bend came a Great Blue Heron hovering 3 feet above the edge. My lens cap was on my camera and I missed a very close up shot. Well, the back drop wasn’t half bad and that is what this painting is all about. (And don’t mention lens caps to me!)…

I was working on this early evening painting when a red sailboat passed by. What a treat to catch!…

“Bee Home”

"Bee Home"

“Bee Home”

“Bee Home”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I was drawn to the block-like shapes and white and blue shadows of these bee homes contrasted against the afternoon light on the wily, encroaching landscape. While enjoying the steady, gentle hum from these working hives, I kept hearing a subtle snorting and stamping from the other side of the blueberry bushes down the lane. I was thinking deer, as it is just about rutting season, when two haltered horses burst past me at full gallop. Turned out they were escapees from the neighbor’s paddock and soon enough were rounded up and lead home…

“Tashmoo View”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

A mellow day faded to a pleasant sunset. As clouds moved in, sunlight danced along edges of blue and gray, saluting the day, heralding the night…

"Around The Corner"

“Around The Corner”

“Around The Corner”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I scouted here late one sunny afternoon. When I viewed it this cloudy overcast day, it impressed me even more. The darks had less definition, but somehow felt moodier and more expressive without the bright sunlight and deeper shadows. I accidentally flushed a Great Blue Heron from out of the marsh behind me as I opened and unsnapped my paint thinner pots. I soon was quickly visited by a lone jogger and then two women walking 5 dogs. Where I stood, barely moving except for brushes, partially hidden from the path by a cedar tree, I was somewhat invisible to the dogs. Only the tiny Brussels Griffon sensed my presence and gave me a passing bark…

Before clouds came in, it was a beautiful day to scout about this side of Vineyard Haven harbor. Although many of the moorings are empty in the outer harbor, it still looks chock full close to shore. Many subjects caught my eye. It was on my walk back to get my paints out of the van that I was struck by the blue interior of this beached dinghy and the colors beyond…

"Black Point After Rain"

“Black Point After Rain”

“Black Point After Rain”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD

A heavy rain silenced all much of the day. Near evening, clouds cleared and a vibrant sunset put smiles on most faces. I ventured out and as I worked was defended by a large flock of tree and barn swallows diving and scooping up the multitude of mosquitos about at dusk…

"Blue Moon Sail"

“Blue Moon Sail”

“Blue Moon Sail”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I painted most of this a few days back and only now have had enough time in my studio to finish it. The evening was gorgeous and the larger ferry, “Island Home”, passed through the rising moon and my location here. Tempted as I was to place it in the painting, this catboat came sailing in as the light faded and I knew it was a better choice…

"Arboretum"

“Arboretum”

“Arboretum”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The rhododendrons were still in bloom when I began this piece. I found it hanging about in my studio looking dejected. Today the sun was out just as it was when I started. A perfect evening to finish and a bonus, no mosquitos! I had fun playing with the field color and then adding the blue to the stones to pull out the shadows. A reverse of what usually happens in a landscape, the blue recedes the background and the green/yellow warmth of the field normally signals closeness to the foreground…
