"The Down Side"

“The Down Side”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 US

This is my third time painting at this location. It is a plateau south of Terlingua Ghost Town and higher up. At each drive up the steep and narrow switch back, I am always in awe that my front wheel drive van can make it up the slope. These are the peaks of the plateau capturing the last rays of the sun as it sets beyond view…

Long Draw Dry Creek

“Long Draw Dry Creek”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 US

I was out scouting around and drove up this dry creek bed. I turned around when I couldn’t drive any farther and there was this painting in front of me…

"From Croton Spring Rd."

“From Croton Spring Rd.”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 US

After a few days scouting this section of the Park at different times of day, I took a chance that this rough, side road would give me the view I wanted. I actually had a couple see me painting and drive in to watch and photo me working. They then tried to buy this piece just as I had put the first stroke of blue on for the sky. Of course, $20.00 did not impress me… What did though was the bear proof food storage unit just behind me. My ears were on guard duty the whole time I did this painting. At dusk when I got in my van and drove out, I saw my first javelina, or peccary , standing near by. I was glad I was leaving…

"Mine Owner's House"

“Mine Owner’s House”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 US

This was painted right outside my bedroom at the Terlingua Trading Company, in Terlingua, Texas. The house is in partial disrepair and now, partial rehab and is made out of adobe. For all of WW I and part of WW II this was not a ghost town but a very lively mining town. The prized mineral was cinnabar, which was smelted into mercury. This was used in detonator caps during the wars until about 1945 when mercury was replace by more modern methods. Most of the 2000 inhabitants left Terlingua at that point. This part became a ghost town, until the arrival of the hippies in the 1970’s and it’s subsequent revival…

"Santa Elena Canyon"

“Santa Elena Canyon”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 US

I painted this in Big Bend National Park, an unbelievable place. This is the Rio Grand exiting out of the Santa Elena Canyon. The Canyon walls are over 1,000 feet high making this a most impressive sight. As I painted, all around me were different types of flycatchers doing their acrobatics as they sought tasty morsels flying along the river banks….

"Early October"

“Early October”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

This was painted before sunrise on an early, hazy day in October. I could never decide if it was finished or not. Last night I added a few flourishes and now it is complete… Sometimes it is good to let a painting sit for a contemplative period to better understand what was done and perhaps why…. Often times the question or problem I thought I was grappling with becomes resolved in working on the next few paintings. And the knowledge is now there to complete the earlier piece….

"Light, Snow"

“Light, Snow”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

This was a hard one to capture, as snow was still falling when I went out. I did some work in the car and finished up in the studio…

"Tomahawk Hi Dry"

“Tomahawk, Hi & Dry”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The Tomahawk is one of the last of the fleet of charter fishing boats to be hauled out for the winter. Captain Buddy Vanderhoop works the waters as long and hard as he can while the game fish are still out of hibernation and catchable. His vessel must have just been hauled out. The rich black of the hull contrasted fiercely witht the subtle, soft, winter seaside colors all around it. The Tomahawk was a painting in my mind the instant my eyes came upon her. Work had to proceeed from inside my van as the wind and rain left me no quarter in which to hide…

"Bluebird Happiness"

“Bluebird Happiness”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I have painted the left side of this field and the houses and ocean beyond at least 3 other times this fall. (You can discover them on my website.) There are 6 bluebird houses set out in the grass and I have not placed any of them in the other paintings as I didn’t feel I could do them justice. The stonewall shadows have also intrigued me in the late day light. This evening in my wanderings about looking for today’s piece to paint, I tresspassed to the other side of the wall and my lightbulb went off. This was it. I raced back into my studio, grabbed my gear and many layers of clothing and gloves and painted into the twilight…Oh, and did I mention cold again?!

“Split Rock”

"Split Rock"

“Split Rock”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

This painting was a request from a few weeks ago. The wind and weather had conspired against me until today with wind coming from the South, but rain possible at any moment. I tried out my painter friend’s new Open Box M easel and tripod in a waterproof box in a waterproof backpack. It turned out to be a very enjoyable mile hike to and down the beach to get the view I liked. The borrowed gear was very comfortable. I could have hiked farther with ease and will again soon…
