"Schooner Visit"

“Schooner Visit”

“Schooner Visit”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $595.00 USD

It was a beautiful day. After being landlocked working on my new deck all week, I yearned for some open sky and water viewing, not to mention painting. This would be the easiest view to get to, but it might not have the best point of interest. Coming around the last corner, I was thrilled to find the masts of a tall ship in the middle of Menemsha Bight…

"Quitsa Sunset, Sailboat"

“Quitsa Sunset, Sailboat”

“Quitsa Sunset, Sailboat”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $595.00 USD

I parked by the boat launch, hoping for inspiration. A boat sailed by in the far distance. A white sail, so far down the white-to-black value scale it appeared mid-gray against the silhouette of a purple-blue hill behind. It was gone before thought could motivate me out the door. I did get out. The sky began to gently shed it’s spectrum. The yellow leaning toward orange got me going. I caught it there, at that spot, on my canvas. But that was nothing. It went on and on into orange, fire, red, hot coals, deeper, darker, exotic red-blue, purple, stellar blue, as star and moonlight opened up the night…

“Sepiessa Point”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

A short walk on a sun filled day and I found myself contemplating the edge of West Tisbury Great Pond. Around the next bend came a Great Blue Heron hovering 3 feet above the edge. My lens cap was on my camera and I missed a very close up shot. Well, the back drop wasn’t half bad and that is what this painting is all about. (And don’t mention lens caps to me!)…

A chance encounter, passing a friend on a one lane dirt road, lead to permission to paint at this owner-vacant property. There was a ladder left from the day’s carpentry work leaning against the second floor balcony. I didn’t hesitate to use it to capture this sunset view. Thank you, Ted!…

"Almost Sundown"

“Almost Sundown”

“Almost Sundown”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

Upon arriving, I found parking lot and dunes all in shadow. I walked up the beach path to the dune top thinking I would have to fish and not paint, as the light had gone. Seeing this view I hurried back down. Grabbing gear I raced back to catch this last sliver of reflected sunshine. The moment passed way too quickly as all turned to shadow colors. As I looked at my unfinished work and started to pack, again, I thought of catching some fish for dinner. Couples began appearing at the dune top after their sunset watch from the beach below. The first group had fishing rods and a striped bass. I did my standard fish inquiry, where, when, lure or bait and started packing up faster! The next couple stopped on top to catch their breath clutching two blue fish. After my questioning and congratulating, I found myself with my two bags and a blue fish to juggle down to the parking lot. Now I had a real dilemma, go right home, clean and cook this fresh fish, or go back to catch my own. I took the easy way out and it was delicious. I came back the next evening to finish this painting and left with only two bags to carry back down to the car…

“Bee Home”

"Bee Home"

“Bee Home”

“Bee Home”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I was drawn to the block-like shapes and white and blue shadows of these bee homes contrasted against the afternoon light on the wily, encroaching landscape. While enjoying the steady, gentle hum from these working hives, I kept hearing a subtle snorting and stamping from the other side of the blueberry bushes down the lane. I was thinking deer, as it is just about rutting season, when two haltered horses burst past me at full gallop. Turned out they were escapees from the neighbor’s paddock and soon enough were rounded up and lead home…
