"Scallop Boat"

“Scallop Boat”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I was in the lee of the wind with 45 mph gusts overhead and farther out from shore. It was not a day to be outside of my van painting however. Just as I was finishing, a thunderhead floated over the lighthouse to my left. It became orange on the sunset side of the anvil shape and deep purple on the eastern side. Moving too fast for me to try to paint it, I can only savor it in my memory…

"Atlantic Drive"

“Atlantic Drive”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

Locating this bridge over the Herring Creek, I found the best vantage point and began work. It was a cheery place to paint. A breeze crept in at dusk and the day ended on a raw note. I was cold to the bone even though I had on my winter jacket and hood. I turned the heat way up as I drove back toward town…

"Distant Cabanas"

“Distant Cabanas”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD

I went back to the farthest NE corner of Edgartown proper and painted this view looking west. That is State Beach, or, as I’ve always known it, Bend-In-The-Road Beach. I have painted those cabanas from many closer, different angles before, but not from this far away…

"Lambert's Cove"

“Lambert’s Cove”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

A windless, 42˚ evening, found me on top of the dunes watching the cloud colors change as the sun went down. The vegetation in winter is so soft and different from summer’s greens and blues. It is always exhilarating working out in the evening coolness with a big sky overhead as the light goes out…

"Katama Moon"

“Katama Moon”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I planned creating another painting of the flat bottomed pond skiff, “Tidely Idely” (see my work March 30, 2011 on my website), which is moored just to the left of this view. However, as I was exploring the best place to setup my easel, I saw that the moon had just come up from behind the cloud bank. I am a sucker for painting moon rise images, but I had not been paying attention this month to moon phases. Normally I plot a plan of action a day or two before a full moon. This was a very pleasant surprise…

"All In A Row"

“All In A Row”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

This has taken a couple of visits to complete. Either it has been too sunny or the wind has been too cold and strong. And when the weather was right, the clouds weren’t. But it always feels so good to head out of the studio with half a painting done, instead of with a blank canvas…

"Eel Pond 1892"

“Eel Pond 1892″, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8”, oil on canvas panel. $750.00 USD

In 1892 this was the northwestern most edge of Eel Pond in Edgartown, Mass. The southeastern most corner was and still is about where the houses stop on the left of the far shore. 120 years of storms and Nor’Easters have eroded away, opened, and pushed the eastern edge of the pond into itself. A small, sheltered anchorage for shallow draft boats is all that is left of the once large saltwater great pond…

"The Old Brickyard"

“The Old Brickyard”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

The Brickyard still has bits and pieces of its past strewn about. The smokestack is in danger of collapse. Yet it is the most memorable and visible remainder of times past. I wander down the dirt path towards it with images of my past visits in my mind. But I was unprepared for winter sun’s late, warm reddish light glancing off the edge of the chimney as I turned the last corner on at woods end. I positioned myself upon a western slope to capture this view as the sun went down…

"Reflecting Pool"

“Reflecting Pool”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

In winter, the beach is always changing. Sand comes in and piles way up above dunes and rock. Sand goes out and bares rock and clay. This visit it was beginning to hauling sand back out. A shelf had built up at the low tide zone and had caught a reflecting pool as the tide finished its course from high to low…

"South West"

“South West”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

Fifty feet above the ocean at sunset may be a glorious view. This night it was. The breeze held off until just after the sun went down. The clouds turned blue to purple to gray. I left when I could see no more to find a color…
