"Island, Home"

“Island, Home”

“Island, Home”, this is a small painting, 6″ x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

This was a good day to paint by the harbor, no breeze, full sun and in the low 40’s. It was a bad time to paint the Island Home ferry. It stays in port about half an hour, unloading and then loading cars and passengers before heading back to the mainland. I thought I had that much time to paint it in. But, oh no, five minutes later, a freight boat came into the slip in front of me and blocked most of the larger boat. Luckily, in this season, there is little freight and it left soon after arriving. In the few minutes remaining, I finished all the details of the larger vessel…

This is the view to the north of the last painting I did, “Scallop Boat”. It was a different evening light as well as different wind direction, and colder. With fewer boats left in harbor in winter, it is easier to see into the far corners compared to the madhouse of summer boating…

My priority today was to be out of the wind. This was an ideal spot to paint from. The sun kept me warm the whole time, and what small breeze there was kept bugs away…

A warm evening on the harbor watching the sun out the thunderheads over the horizon. There was a bad downpour earlier in the day and the sky never recovered from the humid fogginess. It was a real surprise to find this illumination at day’s end. A pleasant surprise…

"Sunset Squall"

“Sunset Squall”, this is a Small painting, 6″x 8″, oil on canvas panel. This painting has SOLD.

I had no ideas of painting the ferry when I pulled up to the dock to check the harbor, weather and wind direction. But, there it was, begging for a portrait. Knowing it was halfway unloaded and I would only have it for 10 more minutes before departure I worked at fever pitch. Looking up I saw this slight glow on the belly of the squall line coming in. The next minute it was a full blown glow made more so by the dark of the impending squall. The boat set off as rain began sprinkling down. I moved to a nearby porch to finish up in the quickly fading light…
